The organisation was formed in January 2010 following the need to deepen electoral research work in Africa that would inform effective citizen participation as well as strengthen policy engagement towards improvement of the quality of electoral and democratic practices.

Backed by 14 civil society organisations, ERC formally submits a petition to Parliament requesting a comprehensive review of the electoral framework.
ERC wins a landmark case against the President of the National Council of Chiefs, Chief Fortune Charumbira, over partisan political comments made ahead of the 2018 Harmonised Elections — comments the courts declared unconstitutional.
A second landmark ruling in ERC's favour compels the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to release the provisional voters' roll ahead of the 2018 Harmonised Elections.
ERC extends its programmes into Zambia, Botswana and Mozambique, growing its SADC footprint to six nations.
